The Renaissance of the Humanities: Why Tech Giants are Hiring Philosophers

For the past twenty years, the prevailing advice given to students entering higher education has been uniform: Study STEM. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics were framed as the only viable pathways to lucrative careers, particularly in the booming tech sector. The humanities—philosophy, literature, history, and anthropology—were often dismissed as impractical passions with limited real-world application.

However, as we move deeper into an era dominated by artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and pervasive algorithms, a surprising shift is occurring in Silicon Valley and beyond. Tech giants are increasingly looking past the pure coding boot camps and heavily recruiting from the humanities. We are witnessing a renaissance of the liberal arts, driven by the realization that while STEM teaches us how to build technology, the humanities teach us why we should build it—and what the human cost might be.

 

The AI Ethics Crisis

The catalyst for this hiring shift is the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence. In its early days, software was relatively deterministic: if X happens, do Y. The primary challenge was writing the code to execute that logic efficiently.

This historical literacy is crucial for tech companies trying to anticipate the long-term societal impact of their products, moving beyond the short-sighted “move fast and break things” mantra.

As technology becomes more complex, explaining it to users, regulators, and the public becomes more difficult. English and communications majors excel at translating abstract, highly technical concepts into compelling, human-centric narratives.

 

 

The Rise of the Chief Ethics Officer

This shift is not just happening at the entry level. We are seeing the institutionalization of the humanities at the executive level.

Roles like “Chief Ethics Officer,” “AI Ethicist,” and “Director of Human-Centered Design” are becoming standard at companies like Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce. These roles are frequently filled by individuals with advanced degrees in philosophy, sociology, or anthropology. Their mandate is to act as the conscience of the engineering team, asking the crucial question: “Just because we can build this, does it mean we should?”

The narrative that a humanities degree is a one-way ticket to unemployment is obsolete. As AI commoditizes basic coding and data entry, the skills that cannot be easily automated—empathy, ethical reasoning, abstract critical thought, and historical perspective—will become the most highly valued assets in the labor market.
